On Kargil, he claims that they had won the war but Nawaz Sharif "chickened out" and gave away the victory.He feels proud that he had internationalised the Kashmir issue through Kargil and secured the support of President Clinton to exercise pressure on India to resolve the Kashmir dispute.As Subramanyam says,  his depiction of defeat as victory shows his utter contempt for the public perception of events in his country and the rest of the world.
